As students prepare to head back to school, the Harris County Municipal Utility District No. 370 (HCMUD 370) Board of Directors is asking drivers to be cautious in school zones and neighborhoods, as well as around school buses to help keep students safe.
Driving safety tips:
- As kids head back to school, be prepared for traffic pattern changes in neighborhoods and around schools, then plan accordingly
- Always pay attention behind the wheel and never chance texting and driving
- Always stop at stop signs on buses regardless of which direction you are driving
- Early morning and midafternoon, residents should be prepared to stop or slow for children
- Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk
Pedestrian Safety Tips:
- Parents: Teach your children traffic and pedestrian safety
- Always walk on sidewalks when available. If no sidewalks are available, walk on the left side of the road
- Always look both ways before crossing the street to check for oncoming traffic
- Always wait for a vehicle to come to a complete stop before crossing or entering a crosswalk
- Never push, play, or shove others while walking near traffic
- Do not use your mobile device at crosswalks or while on the road
Cyclist Safety Tips:
- Check that your child's bike fits them properly and that all the bike's functions are working correctly. Also, check that the tires are sufficiently inflated.
- Both kids and parents should wear appropriate safety gear, including helmets when biking. Make sure the helmet fits properly and is worn snugly on the head.
- Parents should teach their kids the importance of biking safely. Remind them to stay aware of their surroundings, and ride in a predictable manner.
- Teach your child to use hand signals when turning to communicate their intentions to drivers. Encourage them to obey traffic rules and practice proper road etiquette
- While crossing intersections, ensure your child is walking along with their bike instead of riding their bike.
